Right use of will — means using the will to create the patterns in your life that create the life you desire. You don’t create the life you want by efforting. Efforting simply reinforces the ego. You create the patterns that bring to life the essence of your authentic self and then you surrender the ego.

In the past 10 years research on the human brain gives us a clear insight into how we can bring into being the life we most desire. This research shows, if we can use a computer analogy, that we have two operating systems: the conscious and the unconscious. The conscious operating system process is what we are aware of in the moment. The unconscious operating system processes all of the automatic processes that go on that allow us to survive as human beings: our breathing, our digestion, our temperature, our emotions, etc. The unconscious operating system is tens of thousands of times more powerful than the conscious operating system. The unconscious operating system operates efficiently and quickly by creating patterns and recognizing patterns. Most of the time outside of our conscious awareness, our brain is automatically adjusting our internal systems to respond to patterns we have created. In other words we are always creating and recognizing patterns. Every activity we do is reinforcing some pattern or reducing the control of another pattern or both.

For example, you may not seem to have much control over picking boyfriends that are not good choices, or whether you will eat ice cream at 10 o’clock at night when you show up in front of the refrigerator. But you do have great choice about creating and reinforcing the underlying patterns that create these endpoint decisions.

We are pattern forming creatures. Create the right patterns in your life and you will have the life you most desire.

However, we are all different. The right patterns for me may not be the right patterns for you.

Fortunately, our differences resolve in to nine basic patterns as described by the Enneagram.

These nine patterns resolve into three different aspects of our personality which are: mental, emotional and bodily or somatic. These correspond to our three intelligences: mental intelligence, emotional intelligence and somatic intelligence. The three aspects of personality and the three centers of intelligence correspondent to Plato’s three virtues: Beauty, Truth and
